PORRIDGE…..HEALTHY OR NOT?
On the whole, yes! Porridge is really good for our bodies. Not only does it warm us up on a chilly day it also porivides blood sugar regulating, slow release energy, to get us through the morning. It is packed with minerals such as Iron, zinc, copper, manganese and calcium, plus, a good does of Vitamin A. What a great way to start the day, right???
Well, again, yes! BUT go steady on the portion size. Porridge is a food that is easy to over eat and add extra calories to with milk and toppings.
Check the packet for suggested portion size and weigh it out, you might be surprised to find you've been having a bigger portion that you realised.
If you are keeping your body weight as it is, about to have an energy burning day or know that you'll be eating light for the rest of the day then a big hearty bowl is good news. However, for those wanting to lose some weight, go careful on the size of your serving.
Bare in mind that those extra toppings can add more calories too, especially the sugary sweet ones! Try a sprinkling of seeds or berries instead of the honey. 👍
